Director of Golf

Derek Lane, PGA

Greetings,
As the time-tested saying goes, “We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” Maxine Van Evera Lupo is a fourteen time RSFGC Club Champion, accomplished author and the embodiment of what golf should be. I have always tried be a student of the game and particularly at the facility where I am employed. I only knew of “Max” through her name on the champions wall in the Golf Shop and her book “Building your swing for better golf with Amy Alcott.”

After speaking with Colleen Greenway, I decided to dive into her life and have been fascinated by the simple elegance of her path and approach to the game of golf. The illustrations in her book were done by her second husband Dom and I believe the perfect complement to her way of teaching.

Maxine was an accomplished amateur, LPGA Instructor and faculty Member at The San Diego Golf Academy. From what I have read and through Mrs. Greenway, she was incredibly communicative and always stressed the fundamentals. Her book and subsequent reprints always go back to making the fundamentals and setup correct. That is a great way to learn and if those are sound, success is far more achievable.

In her later years, she stayed active and became adept at bowling and billiards. In all of the information found, Max looked happy, content and was always successful.

Maxine Van Evera Lupo passed away peacefully on August 1, 2016 at the age of 94 in Encinitas. If you do not own a copy, you should purchase Building a Better Swing, How to Master a Great Golf Swing and How to Master the Inner Game of Golf. They are 100% relevant today and have more than stood the test of time.

RSFGC has so much to offer and this was a truly special treat to learn about one of its own. Rest in Peace Maxine.

Respectfully,
Derek
